It’s all about the dollar bills, bills, bills…

These striking, evocative large-scale sculptures, which can be found in Scott Campbell‘s upcoming solo presentation Using All The Freedoms We Have at Over The Influence art gallery in Hong Kong, are part of his latest fine arts series – on the pervasive influence of money on contemporary art, and will run from 14 December 2018 to 12 January 2019.

With a penchant for thought-provoking topics, the renowned Los Angeles based contemporary artist, who is best known for his tattoo work on celebrities like Robert Downey Jr., Sting, Courtney Love and Orlando Bloom, juxtaposes iconic imagery with sheets of uncut American dollar bills, employing precise multi-layered laser cut techniques on paper.

These symbols of wealth are contrasted with ephemerality and death, further reinforcing the perplexing nature of the seemingly ever-proliferating role of capitalism.

The effect of a sunken relief also hints towards ominous undertones, and allusions to inevitable change and decay.

Such iconography references the vanitas themes found in 17th century Dutch religious paintings. Through the artist’s signature style, memento mori objects such as skulls serve as explicit reminders of the vanity of earthly pleasures and goods.
